The progress of the Nigerian economy will be determined by the leadership style it adopts and how government tackle its socio-economic challenges. I want to believe that the general election for 2019 will pave the way for economic prosperity. The major problem that requires urgent attention after the election in spite of who assumes office should be:
- Poor leadership. This aspect of governance needs to be addressed because it goes a long way in determining the progress of the country. The reason for the country’s economic downturn is not because it lacks enough resources (Human and Material), but leadership problems.
- The issue of poor leadership gravitates to corruption, which on the other hand, retards the growth and development of the nation. Poor leadership requires attention to curtail the growth of crime in Nigeria.
- Poor standard of education. This comes from poor leadership and corruption. The standard of education in Nigeria will continue to decline until we address the problems of corruption and bad leadership in the country. Nigeria is endowed with human and material resources, but the problem facing it stems from putting the right pegs in the round holes. That one is a professor does not make him/her fit for the job.
- The issue of terrorism. This is a severe problem facing the country in spite of efforts to curtail it. In my view, terrorism is not the issue, but bad governance, corruption, illiteracy and unemployment. When people are gainfully employed, there will be less people to brainwash into terrorism.
If the government can tackle these challenges, the country will be back on the wheel of progress.
Salient points. Just what needs to be constantly talked about. Hopefully there will be a transformation…Kudos
Thanks Taiwo for your comments.
The points noted are true but I have reservations for the point of view that poor leadership gravitates to corruption. Corruption is an independent problem and it affects all facets of the society including the leadership. If leadership is a product of the society, and the society is corrupt, then little wonder the leadership it will produce.
From the family to the school to religious centers to private and public offices to the security outfits to those in charge of fighting corruption and unfortunately the judiciary, corruption reigns supreme. Something as little as jumping a queue, throwing trash out of the window or packing abruptly to quickly buy something along are manifestations of corruption.
Thus, fighting corruption starts from each self and proceeds to the other, with time it will permeate the society and obviously the leadership. Then other things will fall in place.
Thanks Abayomi for this piece. I can’t agree less with you. However, the body language of the leadership is also very crucial in dealing with this menace of corruption. And I think the writer is taking it from that angle. Let me repeat that i agree that everyone must brace up, but the leaders should do more than lip service. Thanks.
All important issues, get these right and Nigeria takes a giant leap into prosperity.
Thanks Kehinde. I just hope that the leaders will act swiftly.

Thanks my Dr
Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!
