The progress of the Nigerian economy will be determined by the leadership style it adopts and how government tackle its socio-economic challenges. I want to believe that the general election for 2019 will pave the way for economic prosperity. The major problem that requires urgent attention after the election in spite of who assumes office should be:
- Poor leadership. This aspect of governance needs to be addressed because it goes a long way in determining the progress of the country. The reason for the country’s economic downturn is not because it lacks enough resources (Human and Material), but leadership problems.
- The issue of poor leadership gravitates to corruption, which on the other hand, retards the growth and development of the nation. Poor leadership requires attention to curtail the growth of crime in Nigeria.
- Poor standard of education. This comes from poor leadership and corruption. The standard of education in Nigeria will continue to decline until we address the problems of corruption and bad leadership in the country. Nigeria is endowed with human and material resources, but the problem facing it stems from putting the right pegs in the round holes. That one is a professor does not make him/her fit for the job.
- The issue of terrorism. This is a severe problem facing the country in spite of efforts to curtail it. In my view, terrorism is not the issue, but bad governance, corruption, illiteracy and unemployment. When people are gainfully employed, there will be less people to brainwash into terrorism.
If the government can tackle these challenges, the country will be back on the wheel of progress.
